Before her marriage, Tyra had been an artist, creating designs for tapestries and draperies. Her parents had insisted that she postpone marriage until Henrik finished his medical training (seven years). During this time she spent some time in Paris studying painting.

The changes from a protected lifestyle in the Swedish military arisotcracy to the wife of a prairie doctor and then to a homesteading widow were dramatic. They must have required a great deal of courage and flexibility.
