    A Biological Survey of North Dakota

    In the preliminary survey of the wild life of North America information has been gathered on the birds and mammals of the country at large, and provisional maps of the life zones of the continent and subdivisions of it have been published. Much of the general information gathered on birds and mammals has been given in bulletins, circulars, and annual reports. The present publication is prepared in accordance with the general plan of providing for definite subdivisions more detailed information on the natural life zones and on the distribution and habits of the native species of birds and mammals. Part I discusses the life zones of North Dakota and Part II the mammals of the State.

    Relationships between Breeding Birds and Vegetation in Four Woodland Types of the Little Missouri National Grasslands

    Bird species richness was greater in the cottonwood woodland type than in the juniper, pine, and ash woodland types. Total breeding bird densities were greatest in the green ash woodland type. The densities of 25 bird species were significantly different among the four woodland types. The densities of birds in five foraging guilds and four nesting guilds were significantly different among the four woodland types. The influence of vegetation on bird community structure is discussed and suggestions are made for preserving and reestablishing woodlands threatened by the strip-mining of lignite coal.

    Hydric Soils of the United States: A Guide to the Recognition

    This guide to Hydric Soils of the United States focuses on the concerns of the National Technical Committee for Hydric Soils (NTCHS). The committee is responsible for maintaining the Hydric Soil Definition, Hydric Soil Criteria, National List of Hydric Soils, and Hydric Soil Indicators. The text and discussion contained in the guide are considered works-in-progress and reflect the current deliberations of the NTCHS. Membership of the NTCHS contains representatives of the Natural Resources Conservation Service, US Fish and Wildlife Service, US Army Corps of Engineers, Environmental Protection Agency, Bureau of Land Management, US Forest Service, universities, and the private sector.
