MXC- Center for Wellness
View/ Open
Abstract
Students in this studio were asked to study the planning principles of a 1960’s “new town” that was proposed for west-central Minnesota, the Minnesota Experimental City(MXC). They were then asked to imagine a new or hybrid typology based on these principles, select a site as if the city had been built in the urban or rural settings that were proposed northwest of Alexandria, and design a building, circa 2011.
The theories and goals of the Minnesota Experimental City (MXC) became the main driving forces for this project as it focused on preventative wellness and care rather than focusing on curing an illness. The Center for Wellness, located just west of Urbank, MN along county highway 38, focused on the eight dimensions of wellness: emotional, environmental, intellectual, physical, occupational, social, spiritual, and vocational. It is the fulfillment of these elements within a person will create a balanced and healthy way of life.
