Implementing Simulation into Oncology Education
Abstract
Nurses, who choose oncology, face complex challenges on a daily basis due to the disease itself and the effects of its treatment. The purpose of the project was to examine the effect implementing simulation into the education of oncology nurses, would have on participant confidence and perceived competence in caring for such complex patients. Two simulation scenarios based on oncologic emergencies were developed and incorporated into the education of oncology nurses at a Midwest hospital. Written pre- and post-evaluations were completed by simulation participants. The results revealed a positive increase in mean rating from pre- to postevaluation, ultimately indicating achievement of the objectives. Simulation continues to provide a safe environment for nurses to build confidence and competence in practice.
