Item Theodore Roosevelt Digital Library(North Dakota State University, 2011-03-01)Presidential libraries gather the artifacts and documents of American presidents, but such institutions exist only for presidents since Herbert Hoover. The Theodore Roosevelt Center at Dickinson State University is creating the equivalent of a presidential library in the digital arena. In cooperation with major repositories including the Library of Congress, the National Park Service, and Harvard College Library, the Center is digitizing all things Roosevelt. Letters, cartoons, diary entries, photographs, films and other articles are being cataloged in a unified, comprehensive collection, which will be fully searchable and freely available online - a feat only possible because of cyberinfrastructure.Item STEM Initiative & GraSUS(North Dakota State University, 2011-03-02)The Center for Science & Mathematics Education hosts both the ND STEM Initiative program (NDSU component) and the GraSUS STEM students into the K12 classrooms project. Both are topics in this presentation.Item Abnormal Leech Eyes in the Turtle Mountains(North Dakota State University, 2011-03-14)In 2009 and 2010, we surveyed the leeches in surface water within the Turtle mountain Band of Chippewa Reservation and in surrounding tribal land. One of the characteristics used to classify leeches is the number and arrangement of the eyes. During the identification process, it was observed some of the leeches have an abnormal number of eyesItem Leech Feeding Behavior(North Dakota State University, 2011-03-21)In 2009 and 2010, we surveyed the leeches in wetlands within the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Reservation and on surrounding tribal land. Different families and species of leeches have different feeding behaviors. Some leech are scavengers and some are parasites of fish and other organisms. During the survey process and while maintaining the leeches in the laboratory, we have observed some interesting feeding behaviors, including cannibalistic behaviors.Item Cyberinfrastructure Conference 2011 E-postcard(North Dakota State University, 2011-03-04)Save-the-date card advertising the conferenceItem Value of CyberInfastructure Access in Leech Identification(North Dakota State University, 2011-03-21)In the summer of 2009 and 2010 we surveyed leeches in the wetlands on the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Reservation and surrounding tribal lands. With the aide of Dr. Frecrich Govedich and Dr. Bonnir Bain from Southern Utah University, we have identified twelve different leech species in the Turtle Mountain area, including Glossiphonia complanata. We are continuing to identify the leeches collected in the summer of 2010. We have a few leeches that are very similar to G. complanata, are found in the same wetland as G. complanata, but may be a subspecies of G. complanata or a different species. CyberIntrastructure access would allow Dr. Govedich and Dr. Bain to directly participate in the identification of these leeches.Item Institutional and Statewide Cyberinfrastructure: Dollars and Sense(North Dakota State University, 2011-03-01)What is Cyberinfrastructure? What is it used for? Why is it important to EPSCoR states like North Dakota? In this talk, we'll examine the Oklahoma Cyberinfrastructure Initiative as a case study, with lessons learned and recommendations for other EPSCoR states such as North Dakota.Item NDSU Electron Microscopy Center(North Dakota State University, 2011-03-01)The NDSU Electron Microscopy Center is a service facility involved in both scientific research and all levels of outreach from K-12 to other colleges. Part of its mission is stimulating interest in science, mathematics, engineering, and technology: active student involvement can generate more excitement than a traditional didactic approach. The Center’s $300,000 JEOL JSM-6490LV scanning electron microscope is available on-line for just such hands-on use. Operation of the SEM will be explained and demonstrated via a remote internet connection by Center staff Jayma Moore and Scott Payne. Technological solutions like this one can provide access and support for a variety of scholastic endeavors.Item What is Cyberinfrastructure?: The Nature of Research Today(North Dakota State University, 2011-03-01)The nature of research has change from individuals working in their lab to discipline groups from multiple institutions working together on large project. Cyberinfrastructure (CI) is the technology that allows these distributed groups to work together as a team. This presentation talks about the use of CI and some of the technology that is “under the hood”.Item Remote Laboratories - Lessons Learned(North Dakota State University, 2011-03-01)Bismarck State College's National Energy Center of Excellence details their implementation of remote laboratories. This session will highlight lessons learned during the development and deployment of the laboratory systems based on past and current projects.
