Operation Crossroads: Atomic Bomb Experiment Bikini Atoll, 1946: Obert Halland, G.M. 2/c USS Cortland - framed photograph

 Item — Box: 2

Scope and Content

From the Collection: The Obert Halland Collection is mostly related to his time in the U.S. Navy. It contains his notes taken while training as a Gunner’s Mate at the U.S. Naval Training Station, in Farragut, Idaho. The training objectives were to learn the parts of the gun, maintenance, and handling. Much of the notes are handwritten with sketches of the guns, cartridges, and tools. In the U.S. Navy Papers folder there is his Rating Description, as well as an affidavit of Evelyn Halland in support of application of discharge dated Nov. 25, 1946. There is also a newsletter from the U.S.S. Cortland, printed on December 2, 1945, while at Sasebo, Kyushu, Japan. In a separate flat box are two items, his U.S. Navy Jacket, and a framed photo of the U.S.S. Cortland commemorating Obert’s service during Operation Crossroads, the Atomic Bomb Experiment at Bikini Atoll. Beyond the U.S. Navy related items, there is a file that contains two newspaper clippings, one of Ober Halland’s obituary, and the other a newspaper story about the Absaraka Mercantile, which features a photo of Ober’t father, Nick Halland. Also included in the collection is Obert’s 1941-1942 Buffalo High School yearbook, called the “Theota”.
