Scope and Contents

From the Collection: The photos in this collection may have been taken by members of the Clapp family and contains scenes of events and places related to Fargo. People in the photographs who are not identified may not be members of the Clapp family. The Fargo Fire Festival was a celebration of the accomplishments made in Fargo after the 1893 Fargo Fire. It was created by the El Zagal Shriners in 1894 with the first official parade held in 1895. It became an official parade in 1899 and grew to a larger event in subsequent years. It was generally held for one to three days in June from 1895 until WWI. A 40th Anniversary parade was held in 1933. The images in the Fire Festival series may be of this event. The collection is broken into 4 series, the Neighborhood series, the Fire Festival Series, the People series, and the Miscellaneous series. Neighborhood: This file contains images of the 8th St S neighborhood in Fargo where I.P. Clapp and E.G. Clapp Sr. resided, specifically around the First Congregational Church located at the 200 block, in approximately 1894. This file includes a photo of John and Jim (James) Pollock as children. Fire Festival: This file contains images of a parade and log/barrel rolling that may be associated with the Fargo Fire Festival. Approximate locations of photos: Broadway/NP Ave in front of Merchant’s State Bank and the Red River Valley Banking Company and Roberts St/NP Ave in Fargo. People: This file contains images of various unknown people at various unknown locations most likely in and around Fargo. Locations include: a boat, possibly an ocean liner; a fort; a field next to a train; a train station; a golf course; a sports field; and a classroom. Miscellaneous: This file contains miscellaneous images of Fargo and the Fargo area including images of the Red River and its dam in 1912 and the Cass County Court House.
