Scope and Contents

From the Collection: The Rolly and Pat Hogue Lawrence Welk Collection documents the close friendship between the Hogues and Lawrence Welk as well as the Hogue’s making of arrangements for Welk for his visits back to North Dakota. The collection has been organized into four series: Correspondence, Calendars, Newspaper clippings and Subject files. The Correspondence Series contains both personal and business letters from Lawrence Welk to Rolly (Buster) Hogue and family from 1965 to 1992. The letters primarily discuss Welk's visits to North Dakota and activities in his life in California. There are also some letters from Governor William Guy, Harold Schafer, Welk's biographer Bernice McGeehan, and others. The Calendars Series includes Lawrence Welk musical family pictorial calendars for the years 1958, 1979-1983. The calendars feature photographs of the Welk musical family members, birth dates and historical dates of the Welk Orchestra. The Newspaper Clippings Series covers Lawrence Welk's association with his home state of North Dakota, his love of golf, and biographical information. The Subject Files Series contains a wide variety of material documenting Lawrence Welk and Hogue's association with him. The Bob Hope Desert Classic file includes official souvenir programs, brochures, and golfing schedules. Mr. Hogue and Welk were participants. The golf scorecard file consists of scorecards, and a schedule for the 1969 Lawrence Pro-Am Celebrity Golf Tournament. The Lawrence Welk Country Club Village information includes brochures, and a postcard of this recreation resort. The North Dakota Rough Rider Award file contains a program of Welk's portrait unveiling. The event took place at the State Capitol in 1967. The scrapbook pages include photographs, correspondence, golf scorecards, and newspaper clippings from 1963-1967. The “Spotlight on Youth, a Family Plan for Business” was an article Lawrence Welk had written for the periodical, Christian Economics, July 1971. Also included in this file is an outline for the Musical Family Plan; an article titled, “Free Enterprise and Personal Responsibility” for Christian Economics; and a draft of the Spotlight article.
