Photocopies of the original diary of Edward Bjornholt together with an English translation. Diary begins with his departure for America in April 1903, coming to Montevideo, Minnesota where he worked for an Erik Molstad. The entries are usually short, telling what he did each day or where he was. The diary continues with his move to McLean County near the Emmet, N.D. post office. The entries document his establishing a homestead farm, interaction with neighbors, social events. Names of others are given in diary. The diary concludes on the day of his marriage to Rachel K. Hanson, November 4, 1907.

Biography

Edvardt Gustafsen Bjornholdt was born in 1878 in Hadeland, Norway, but grew up near Oslo on the Hakloa farm. He immigrated to America in 1903 with two cousins, coming to Montevideo, Minnesota. He worked on a local farm until the fall of 1904 when he homesteaded in McLean County, N.D. west of Garrison, N.D. In November 1907 he married Rachel K. Hanson. They farmed in the area. He changed his name after coming to America to Edward (sometimes Edvart) Bjornholt.
