The Ruth (Tietz) DeNault Collection consists of one copied portrait of the John Tietz, Jr. and Emilie (Treichel) Tietz family, circa 1927, and one shawl, circa 1870-1890.
The copied photograph [2007.09.01] is of John Tietz, Jr. and Emilie (Treichel) Tietz with their twelve children in 1927. The family lived on a farm north of New Leipzig, in Grant County, North Dakota. The people in the photograph have been identified. Back row (left to right): Bertha, Albert, Edward, Robert, Reinhold, Helen, and Mary. Front row (left to right): Theodore, Edna, John Jr., Arthur, Emilie, Elsie, and Oscar.
The shawl [2007.09.02] is a light-weight, hand-spun “Karierte Plachte”/ shoulder shawl of Prussian blue and white checkered-plaid pattern. This surviving Plachte/ shawl originated through Emilie’s Treichel household in Leipzig, Bessarabia, circa 1870-1890. The side of the shawl is 43 inches wide and 74 inches long.
