Samuel H. Logan was born in October 1864 in Galt, Ontario, Canada. He was first listed in the 1882 Fargo city directory as a photo printer, and in 1883 he is listed as an artist. By 1884 he was an employee of the F.J. Haynes Studio. He went into partnership with Arthur E. Bestic as Bestic & Logan circa 1884, opening a studio at 204 Broadway.
