Knights of Columbus Building
The Broadway Department Store pictured at right on a 1909 postcard, was located at 222-224 Broadway, in the Knights of Columbus Building. An article in the Fargo Forum & Daily Republican dated August 21, 1909 announced the stores grand opening. It listed G. W. Lemon as manager.
The article states the following in regard to the store:
The policy of the new store will be to refund the money in every case where for any reason whatever the purchase does not suit the purchaser. It does not need to be a mistake of the store. If the goods are not satisfactory the store guarantees to take them back. The slogan of the store will be "Above high rents, below high prices" and they expect to boost North Fargo all the time.
This must have been a short lived business, as construction of the building was completed in 1909. By the 1910-1911 Fargo city directory, an automobile repair business called E.M.F. Company was listed at the address.
The Knights of Columbus met in the upper floors and leased the ground floor as commercial space. After the E.M.F. Company, other businesses that used the commercial space were, Fred W. Krause Co, and the Hughes Store. The building was destroyed by fire on October 12, 1948.
