Broadway in the 1910s

This real photograph postcard was taken in 1911. The date is established by the destruction of the Fargo National Bank on the northwest corner of Broadway and N.P. Avenue which occurred in 1911. This view looks north from approximately the Northern Pacific Railroad tracks. Enlargements of both sides of Broadway can be seen below.

On the west side of Broadway, we can see the Herbst Department Store, an unknown store, the F. W. Woolworth store, and Alex Stern & Co. The offices on the second floor include the Fidelity Mutual Life Insurance Company, the Great West Life Assurance Company, Dr. Cambell (eye-ear-nose-throat specialist), Drs. Sherman and Crum (dentists), the Northern School of Photography, and Northwestern Mutual Fire Insurance Company.

On the east side of Broadway, we can see the Red River Valley National Bank (offering 5% on savings). To the left is the Frank Lynch Co. and John Deere Plows in the building with a statue of a leaping deer on top. The next building to the left houses the businesses of the North Dakota Improvement Company, R. S. Tyler Farm Loans, and W. J. Lane real estate on the second floor, and the First National Bank on the first floor. North of N.P. Avenue was the Merchants National Bank In the distance, at he far left of the image, is the Fargo Mercantile Company store.

This real photograph postcard was taken from atop the building on the southeast corner of Broadway and N.P. Avenue. The view is looking north. Note that across the street are remains of the Fargo National Bank before it was rebuilt in 1911.

The parade is of the United Commercial Travelers. They were holding a convention in Fargo in June 1911.
