Abstract
DESIGN WITH layering. The layering creates spaces that are safe, disconnected and protected from the outside. This is shown and felt through the creation of pathways and connections to spaces that are cut through the layering of materials, structure and spaces that address human scale in different ways. The memory of traveling through the layers makes reaching the courtyard and direct connection to the sky parallel to a safe haven or an oasis. DESIGN WITH permeability. The permeable design lets in light, views and an appropriate level of public activity. This method provides safe spaces for learning and creating that silmultaneously reach outward to recognize the positive effects of community connectivity in the culture of the arts. In the spirit of being home to the culture of art, dance and education, the architecture must reference history. Through the renewal and the reinterpretation of the past elements of Mexican architecture, this design references both the history and the future of this community. This project studies the role of architecture in relation to personal exploration and community that is embedded within the realms of traditional and contemporary arts and dance. In order to reference this city as an important part of Mexico and to celebrate the Mexican culture and livelihood of what this community once was, the design must reach outward and create a relationship with the public realm. This can be done by finding an appropriate weaving of public and private.
