This thesis explores the potential benefits a community can gain from a waterfront park as a downtown amenity. Currently, the city of Minot, ND is experiencing a growth in population due to the recent oilfield activity in Western North Dakota. Along with growth comes a demand for public spaces. This thesis proposal redevelops a derelict industrial waterfront within close proximity of Minot’s downtown, assisting in the revitalization efforts that are currently taking place within the area. The park serves as a cultural gathering space, offering year round activities to the residents of Minot. In addition, the park will address the issue of seasonal flooding by providing flood protection for the area. The design of the park will be inspired by the local history, helping to create a unique sense of place within the downtown. The ultimate goals of the project include; increase surrounding economic activity, provide flood protection, create an identity for the downtown area, and provide a cultural gathering space for the community.
