| dc.description.abstract | In today’s society the homeless are often marginalized because they do not fit the normalized idea of sedentary dwelling in post-industrial societies. This leads to a misunderstanding of the motivations and personal values of those that are homeless. A stigma like this creates a critical disconnect between the people who want help and those that can give it. To counter this detrimental mentality, it is best to create an environment in which this group of people can be free to make personal choices about how they wish to dwell, which may help them better integrate back into their community.Due to Winnipeg’s historical ties to nomadic people and its percentage of these people represented within the homeless population, it seems reasonable to propose that a new type of homeless shelter be placed here; one which strays from the idea that there is a single correct sedentary way to live one’s life. The design encourages free choice between being sedentary or transient; wanting a home or accepting homelessness.
The overall proposal is that through a socially conscious and individually focused interpretation of a homeless shelter, these people will be able to live in a way that facilitates purposeful dwelling. | en_US |
