The building at 15 7th Avenue S. was originally built in 1886 for Major Alonzo Edwards who used it to publish The Argus, an early Fargo newspaper. It was converted into the Martin Hotel by Terence Martin, and at the time of its grand opening on October 7, 1895, was managed by W. H. Baker. The hotel went through several different owners, before being sold to William Prescott, who changed the name to the Prescott Hotel, about 1901.
