Sherman House

The principle means of travel in the 1870s was the railroad and the Sherman House was was well situated for the traveler. It was located at the southwest corner of Front Street and 7th Avenue S., a short walking distance from the Northern Pacific station located in the Headquarters Hotel.

The Sherman House was built by Terrence Martin in 1877 and sold to Mr. G. J. Kissner in 1879. The Sherman House was destroyed by fire on October 2, 1885. In the 1888 city directory, Mr. Kissner was still listed as proprietor of the Sherman Hotel, then located at the corner of Broadway and 2nd Avenue N. By 1891, the hotel had moved again to 417 N.P. Avenue, and Christine McCuen was listed as proprietor. In June 1892, Isaac Blair bought the hotel, and operated it out of the Fargo House. hotel building at 322-324 Front Street. At some point between October 1892 and August 1893, the hotel was sold to James Kennedy, who remodeled it and named it the New Fargo House hotel.

The images were all taken by photographer F. J. Haynes. They are all of the first Sherman House hotel located on the corner of Front Street and 7th Street S. After the 1885 fire the lot on which the first Sherman House stood remained empty until the Waldorf Hotel was built in 1899.
