Background information will include perspectives on learning theories and debates about the role of technology in education. Since 2002, Weblogs have been shown to have an impact upon politics, journalism, and many other aspects of our culture. Weblogs are placed within the larger context of the World Wide Web. Timothy Berners-Lee's discusses them as a place where people "meet and read and write" (Richardson, 2006, p. 1). Weblogs are a part of Web 2.0, sometimes referred to as the Read/Write Web. Emphasis in this presentation is placed upon weblog applications within education by institutions, administrators, instructors, and students inside and outside of the classroom. This science education center will provide innovative programs, expand educational opportunities for a wide array of students, and generally enhance the efforts of Homestake DUSEL. Key to the vision is the weaving together of on-site and distance components. The underground science laboratory will be available to all through computer-simulated environments and access to authentic scientific data.Item Theodore Roosevelt Digital Library(North Dakota State University, 2011-03-01)Presidential libraries gather the artifacts and documents of American presidents, but such institutions exist only for presidents since Herbert Hoover. The Theodore Roosevelt Center at Dickinson State University is creating the equivalent of a presidential library in the digital arena. In cooperation with major repositories including the Library of Congress, the National Park Service, and Harvard College Library, the Center is digitizing all things Roosevelt. Letters, cartoons, diary entries, photographs, films and other articles are being cataloged in a unified, comprehensive collection, which will be fully searchable and freely available online - a feat only possible because of cyberinfrastructure.Item Institutional and Statewide Cyberinfrastructure: Dollars and Sense(North Dakota State University, 2011-03-01)What is Cyberinfrastructure? What is it used for? Why is it important to EPSCoR states like North Dakota? In this talk, we'll examine the Oklahoma Cyberinfrastructure Initiative as a case study, with lessons learned and recommendations for other EPSCoR states such as North Dakota.Item NDSU Electron Microscopy Center(North Dakota State University, 2011-03-01)The NDSU Electron Microscopy Center is a service facility involved in both scientific research and all levels of outreach from K-12 to other colleges. Part of its mission is stimulating interest in science, mathematics, engineering, and technology: active student involvement can generate more excitement than a traditional didactic approach. The Center’s $300,000 JEOL JSM-6490LV scanning electron microscope is available on-line for just such hands-on use. Operation of the SEM will be explained and demonstrated via a remote internet connection by Center staff Jayma Moore and Scott Payne. Technological solutions like this one can provide access and support for a variety of scholastic endeavors.Item What is Cyberinfrastructure?: The Nature of Research Today(North Dakota State University, 2011-03-01)The nature of research has change from individuals working in their lab to discipline groups from multiple institutions working together on large project. Cyberinfrastructure (CI) is the technology that allows these distributed groups to work together as a team. This session will highlight lessons learned during the development and deployment of the laboratory systems based on past and current projects.Item Train with a Leader! Lake Region State College's Health IT Program(North Dakota State University, 2011-03-01)The landscape of the American Health Care System is undergoing rapid change as providers transition from paper to electronic health records (EHRs) and strive to meet the criteria of ‘meaningful use’. This transition requires a workforce with enhanced skills to successfully implement, support and maintain the EHR systems. Lake Region State College, in Devils Lake, ND, in conjunction with the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT, is offering on-line Health IT certificates that can be completed in six months. LRSC will offer training in four workforce roles: Technical Software Support, Health IT Trainers, Clinician/Practitioner Consultants, and Workflow Redesign Specialists. Individuals completing Lake Region’s Health IT certificate will be prepared to support Electronic Health Records in clinics, hospitals, long term care facilities, public health agencies or vendors of electronic health records systems. Detailed information regarding course content, schedules, cost of certification, and tuition assistance will be discussed.Item STEM Initiative & GraSUS(North Dakota State University, 2011-03-02)The Center for Science & Mathematics Education hosts both the ND STEM Initiative program (NDSU component) and the GraSUS STEM students into the K12 classrooms project.
