Garrison Dam and Diversion Project Records

Abstract Pamphlets, articles, and newspaper clippings on the history of the Garrison project from the 1950s through the early 1970s. Includes mention of people, organizations, and places involved, including C.S.N.D., Inc. (Committee to Save North Dakota, Inc.) which opposed the project, Sivert Thompson, and the North Dakota Farmers Union. Also includes Canadian pamphlets raising concerns about the diversion project.

Scope and Contents The Garrison Dam Collection contains 139 photographic prints, predominately 11x14 and 8x10 inches in size, taken from circa 1946 to 1954. The collection has been divided into six series: Aerial views, Dam construction, Intake structure, Spillway, People, and Power plant and tunnels. The Aerial Views Series includes aerial photographs of stages of the construction of site, as well as views of the completed site. There is one night-time photograph. Abstract In 1944 U.S. Congress authorized the Garrison Dam and Reservoir project. Through the Flood Control Act of 1944, this project was one of a system of multiple-purpose reservoirs on the Missouri River, extending from Montana to South Dakota.

Abstract Typed manuscript of Lang's German Russian family lines, all of whom emigrated from Russia between 1899 and 1909, eventually settling in the Streeter, Gackle, and Fredonia, N.D. areas. Family names include Lang, Kalmbach, Krieger, Kleinknecht and Dorr. Paper was written for the Germans from Russia symposium held at NDSU in July 1990.
