Established in 2015, the Materials Collection at the Klai Juba Wald Architectural Studies Library (ASL) started when a faculty member brought in a donation of bricks, pavers, concrete blocks, natural stone, and a file case containing product brochures and manufacturer catalogs. From this initial donation, wood, metal, and glass materials were gradually added. In the 2019-2020 academic year, the Department of Architecture began supporting graduate assistants to systematically expand this resource through generous donations and increase access by means of a collection inventory that would record previous and new donations. The collection now includes tile, countertop, and siding samples. From 2020 to the present, the Materials Collection has tripled in size and moved to a new space in the east end of the library and continues to grow.

The purpose of the Materials Collection is to provide students, faculty, and staff with additional means for studying these materials in depth to expand their knowledge and understanding of how they work together within various building and landscape systems. The collection can be accessed at the ASL on the third floor of Klai Hall at NDSU's downtown campus.
