Malting Barley: Contribution of Minnesota and North Dakota to the Soul of Beer

Presented by: Dr. Paul Schwarz, Professor, NDSU Department of Plant Sciences

Dr. Paul Schwarz of NDSU will present a talk titled "Malting Barley: The Contribution of Minnesota and North Dakota to the Soul of Beer."

Barley, used for the production of malt, which is a key ingredient in beer, has an important place in history and economy of our region. This presentation outlines the history of barley and beer from their introduction by colonists in the 1600’s through current explosion of regional craft brewers. Emphasis will be on fun and little-known facts.
The presentation will be pre-recorded.

Schwarz's presentation is in correlation with the 2020 One Book One Community reading project. This year's book selection is The Lager Queen of Minnesota by J. Ryan Stradal. With a cast of lovable yet complicated characters, The Lager Queen of Minnesota vibrantly captures the values and beauty of the Midwest in this multigenerational story of community, love, family secrets, and working class struggles. It is a story of two generations of female brewers who each reckon with a chance to repeat or resolve the mistakes that tore their family apart. Brought together by hardship, the women discover that they are the only people who can help save one another, in life and in the business of beer.
