Devastating natural and human-made catastrophes remind the nation of the importance of preparing for disasters. September is National Preparedness Month (NPM), so what better time to review government resources for emergency and disaster management. 

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) coordinates preparing for, preventing, mitigating the effect of, responding to and recovering from all domestic disasters, including acts of terror.  Most importantly FEMA provides information about on-going disaster responses, response plans, key emergency management officials, documents, and other resources.

While FEMA focuses primarily on resources for other agencies, as well as state and local governments, Ready.gov showcases articles, checklists, and tips for preparing for disaster and emergencies for individuals, families, and businesses. 

In addition to the resources provided by FEMA and Ready.gov, the Department of Homeland Security has established a collection of documents related to homeland security and emergency management policy, strategy, and organizational management under the Homeland Security Digital Library. Material housed in this resource include lessons learned, after-action reports, and emergency plans from state and local responders.
